DNS: The address book in the network

The 'Domain Name System' (DNS) is essentially an information service that manages addresses in the 'namespace' of the Internet and thus directs user queries to the right destination. The user enters a reasonably comprehensible query - such as the URL 'brm.de' - and the DNS then converts this text into a long number combination in one of hundreds of thousands of 'name servers', which corresponds exactly to the 'connection number' (IP address) of the desired subscriber.
