Green IT in the face of energy shortages

When it comes to energy saving and environmental friendliness, green IT seems to be the best and most proven solution for the time being. This rethink has resulted from rising energy prices and growing environmental awareness. However, even before this time, there were pioneers who were particularly concerned with the topic of energy saving and environmental friendliness.

Green IT in the face of energy shortages

What is the difference?

A data center emits an extreme amount of heat and often has to be cooled with air conditioning systems, for example. The electricity used for this is not only very expensive, but also unsustainable in terms of resources. In addition, the ecological footprint swells and is in turn very harmful to the environment.

In order to minimize and solve these problems, clever minds have developed the Green IT operating concept. In addition, many websites provide helpful tips for optimizing and saving resources. Bremen entrepreneur Harald Rossol was one of the first in Germany to successfully apply green IT. In addition, his company b.r.m. can save around 60% of energy costs without any loss of performance thanks to its certified data center, which also has a positive impact on customers. His hardware and software optimizations have helped him and his company to win a number of awards and a high reputation in the IT industry.

Green IT at b.r.m.

The new operating concept is standard for b.r.m. standard. In addition to numerous other optimizations in the data center, Green IT has proven to be a successful and certified concept. The environmentally friendly and GDPR-compliant data center has been available to b.r.m. customers for years. The waste heat from the data center is used to heat and cool offices.

B.r.m. is a pioneer of green IT, which is consciously and as sustainably as possible committed to energy efficiency, the environment and the conservation of resources.

Post-growth & Green-IT - b.r.m. in the resource efficiency event series of Thega

Postwachtum & Green-IT - b.r.m. in the resource efficiency event series of Thega in Thuringia

Post-growth & green IT - b.r.m. in Thega's resource efficiency event series. As part of the "Resource Efficiency Qualification", Thega from Thuringia offers further training for consultants. This is carried out with the support of the Thuringian Ministry of the Environment's State Initiative for Resource Conservation. In what is now the third block of the series, practical examples will be discussed and we are particularly pleased that Mr. Harald Rossol will be able to present b.r.m. and the award-winning green IT data center.

Qualification for resource efficiency through the Thega

SMEs can receive funding for resource efficiency measures through the Thuringian GREEN Invest funding program. The consultancy itself is also supported. Thega's series of events focuses on the continuous training of experts in the field of resource efficiency. In particular, the methods and instruments for analyzing and increasing resource efficiency in production processes are addressed. Theory and practice will be discussed over a total of 6 days. On 27.04.2022, various practical examples of resource efficiency will be presented, including b.r.m.'s green IT data center.

Energy and resource efficiency in data centers - Green IT

The environment and IT must not and should not be thought of separately. The energy costs of IT systems are still not recorded separately and therefore cannot be optimized.

The focus of new IT systems is on energy efficiency while maintaining high quality and security. We have developed a cost-effective operating concept that can save more than 60% energy - using standard market software and server components.

b.r.m. is a pioneer in green IT and helped develop the 'Blue Angel' certificate for energy-efficient data centers in collaboration with the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety and the German Federal Environment Agency. Our energy-efficient data center has been certified for quality, environment and occupational safety with its integrated management system according to 'ecostep' since 2005. In the same breath, the association blühfläche.de e.V. should also be mentioned, which is committed to the preservation and development of flowering areas and strips in northern Germany.

Post-growth leads to sustainable companies

These and other companies are synonymous with the efficient use of resources and their careful handling under the term post-growth. The fact that post-growth & green IT is also represented by b.r.m. at the Thega series of events on resource efficiency is naturally a particular pleasure for us. The basic idea behind the alternative economic model "post-growth economy" is that the economy should also function without growth. The current competition in the economy, which is all about faster, higher and further, is depleting natural resources.

As early as 1972, the Club of Rome warned of the consequences of unchecked economic growth. The path to post-growth can begin with small steps. For example, reducing output can lead to an improvement in quality. Certain products and services should be offered less, but in higher quality.

This topic was also recently discussed in Impulse magazine, in whose article. b.r.m. is also cited as an example. Interested readers can find these articles here.

Certified EcoStep 5.1 management system at b.r.m.

Certificate Management System EcoStep 5.1 IT-Service Bremen b.r.m.
Certificate Management System EcoStep 5.1 IT-Service Bremen b.r.m.

Certified EcoStep management system: b.r.m. has once again been certified in accordance with the EcoStep 5.1 management system for small and medium-sized enterprises. Starting in 2008, this is now the 15th and 16th year in a row that b.r.m. has been certified for its operating procedures and processes. For all management systems, the focus is on ensuring that tasks and activities are in line with the objectives and that operational processes run smoothly.

EcoStep is a practice-oriented alternative to the conventional ISO standards. Combined in one system, it uses the most important standard requirements of the following standards from an SME perspective:

  • DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 Quality management
  • DIN EN ISO 14001:2015 Environmental management
  • DIN ISO 45001:2018 Occupational health and safety

With the help of the three aspects (quality, environmental protection and occupational health and safety), various process descriptions are possible, ranging from value creation processes to management processes. Development processes and other supporting processes are also recorded.

The EcoStep management system uncovers potential for reducing costs, implements controlling and key performance indicator systems to support management and increases legal certainty. Continuous improvement is one of the top priorities here. Not only the certification audit for the award of certification is important here, but also the continuous chain of internal adaptations and adjustment of existing processes to the new, changing circumstances of day-to-day business.

Our thanks go to the great cooperation with the certification body GUTcert. Mr. Markus Rossol from b.r.m. carried out the audit with Mr. Hauke Kreutzfeld from GUTcert.

The resulting potential for improvement is constantly being exploited and we are already looking forward to the next 2 years, after which it will once again be: certified management system according to EcoStep.

Flowering areas and blade servers?

Those who count themselves among the pioneers of green IT in Germany are also observing developments outside the server and away from CO2-neutral cooling of data centers. For this reason, we are also concerned about insect mortality and the end of biodiversity.

With the flowering area project is a welcome project by regional farmers in the Lilienthal area, where citizens and companies can take over the sponsorship of meadows where only 'insect food' is grown. Not only does everything that creeps and flies find enough food there, the splendor of the flowers in these meadows is also pleasing to the human eye.

b.r.m. has taken over the sponsorship of 15,000 square meters of flower meadow. Many more hectares have already been allocated to supporters. We hope that the flowering meadow project will find many more imitators.

Green IT and climate change

With the discussion about CO2-tax, the issue of consistently implementing green IT is also gaining new significance. This is because global digitalization consumes vast amounts of energy. Every email, every search query contributes to the server load. Clemens Rohde from the Fraunhofer Institute in Karlsruhe says: "The energy requirement of data centers in Germany is currently around 10 to 15 TWh. Converted into equivalents, this is roughly equivalent to the CO2-emissions that we have in air traffic in Germany." A company like Google, for example, has the energy requirements of a city of 200,000 inhabitants - and if the internet were a country, it would have the sixth largest energy requirements in the world.

In future, the only way to be on the safe side is to consistently reduce the energy consumption of your data centers. Or those who consistently rely on renewable energies for operation. Both apply to b.r.m., for example: We have optimized our servers with regard to green IT, and we only use renewable energies for operation. On the other hand, if you don't do this, the introduction of a CO2-tax will simply be more expensive in future.

Green IT as a climate goal

Mitigating climate change is a cross-cutting task that is gradually affecting all sectors of society. Under the sponsorship of Forschungszentrum Jülich, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy has therefore a project called TEMPRO project, which aims to provide a uniform scientific basis for evaluating the energy efficiency of data centers. It will also develop new energy-saving technologies to significantly reduce energy requirements in the IT sector. The acronym TEMPRO stands for 'Total Energy Management for Professional Data Centers'. The project is being coordinated at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg.

One of the partners in this project is the Bremen-based IT company b.r.m., which has already won many prizes and awards in the green IT sector with its energy-saving server technologies, particularly in the area of efficient cooling. As part of this project, we are using all our knowledge and experience to ensure that Germany can achieve the agreed climate targets in the IT sector on time.

If you have any questions or would like further information, please contact b.r.m. and ask for Harald Rossol or Hansjürgen Wilde.

Qualitative growth

At first glance, the term 'qualitative growth' seems paradoxical: doesn't every 'more' also require a greater consumption of resources? This may be the case when we think of 'meat products' or 'refrigerators'. But other laws apply in the field of 'immaterial services'. Here, greater productivity is perfectly possible without using more raw materials.

For years, b.r.m. has been following the path of 'qualitative growth': thanks to the consistent implementation of ideas from Green IT, our raw material and energy requirements are decreasing from year to year, our personnel requirements have remained constant over the years, while our customer base as well as the number and quality of services offered are constantly growing. We demonstrate every day that 'qualitative growth' is possible. Moreover, our commitment to climate protection and the environment has already earned us many prizes and awards.

If you would like to find out more, please contact Harald Rossol. The Managing Director of b.r.m. can look back on 20 years of experience in the field of 'qualitative growth' and various teaching assignments ...
