The b.r.m. IT & Aerospace GmbH will be at the Aero in Friedrichshafen from April 17 - 20, 2024 at our joint stand of the State of Bremen in Hall 2 (Stand 309, Bremen). Hatten-UAS German Flight Center is the test center for unmanned aviation, located at the Oldenburg-Hatten EDWH airfield. Hatten-UAS can support companies, authorities and organizations with security tasks, universities and scientific institutions for projects and product developments for unmanned aircraft systems at any time. With 5500 m² of hangar space, licensed aircraft testers and an operating area that also allows mixed manned/unmanned operations, you get everything from a single source: from ground testing to customer presentations.

Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) is the integration of unmanned or autonomous aircraft into a common airspace with manned aviation.

The aim of the Advanced Air Mobility Initiative Northwest Germany and German Bight (AAM-NW) is the successive development of structures within which the operation of UAS is considerably simplified and automated and safety is increased, taking into account all relevant airspace users. In a U-Space real laboratory, experience is to be gathered for the creation of future highly automated operating strategies.

b.r.m. IT & Aerospace GmbH was again awarded the prestigious EcoStep certificate on February 23, 2024, making it the first company with a management system for a U-Space Service Provider (USSP), a certification that combines the most important standard requirements of ISO standards 9001, 14001 and 45001. This is another milestone and very special moment for us and underlines our commitment to the field of unmanned aviation. This multiple certification recognizes our approach to quality, environmental protection and health and safety at work.

Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) is an aviation concept that develops and implements innovative aviation technologies to improve the safety, sustainability and efficiency of aviation. This applies to both urban air mobility (UAM) and regional air mobility (RAM).

Increasing urbanization is exacerbating the socio-economic disparities between urban and rural areas, which can lead to difficulties in terms of infrastructural connections and supply in rural areas. Local and long-distance public transport connections with trains and buses are often limited and deliveries of goods are very time-consuming. As a result, the quality of supply for people and companies in rural areas suffers. Drones are already being used for agricultural purposes in rural areas. They measure fields and use thermal imaging cameras to detect and warn of deer and other animals hiding in the field.

Potential of drones through advanced air mobility

In addition, unmanned air traffic could also resolve other difficulties in rural areas. Drones are one way of compensating for socio-economic disparities. The following concept is conceivable for supplying goods using drones. The goods are delivered to a central distribution center and then transported directly to the customer in a targeted and fast manner using drones. This type of supply is not only fast, but also improves the CO2 balance thanks to the electrification of the drones thanks to Advanced Air Mobility. Demand-driven delivery can be made possible by drones with location flexibility. Drones can also be used as part of the RAM to transport people to hard-to-reach places.

The Hatten-UAS German Flight Center is the location for BVLOS flights and UAS testing as well as for general drone testing. As a location in northwest Germany, the Hatten-UAS German Flight Center has the necessary ascent permit and a comprehensive infrastructure for VLOS and BVLOS flights with UAS.

The necessary ascent permit for BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) with UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) was granted to Flugschule Borkum GmbH by the State Aviation Authority of Lower Saxony. The Hatten-UAS site has thus reached another important milestone in the development of an Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) strategy for a U-Space Reallabor North-West Germany and German Bight with the Bremen UAS Control Center (USSP). b.r.m. The Hatten-UAS German Flight Center offers an ideal combination of IT services, U-Space Service Provider (USSP) services and infrastructure for the integration of UAS into manned air traffic. The 3,600 square kilometer BVLOS flight area extends from Hatten-UAS across northwest Germany and the German Bight to the North Sea. Hatten-UAS is thus setting new standards for the development of UTM, UAS and BVLOS routes.

Promotion of UAS, BVLOS and UTM

One focus of Hatten-UAS is the development of solutions for efficient interaction between UAS and manned aviation. We rely on remote identification using the triangulation of transponder signals. This makes it possible to identify all objects and aviation participants while increasing safety at the same time. It also complies with a new EU regulation on the remote identification of drones.

Flugschule Borkum GmbH is an essential part of the Hatten-UAS German Test Flight Center. With an extensive training program for pilots and remote pilots, the development and safety in the field of UAS, VLOS, BVLOS and UTM is promoted.

A native reception at the Bremen State Representation in Berlin, as Harald Rossol described it, for 100 years of aircraft construction in Bremen. The capital also appreciates this and held a New Year's reception on 18.01.2024 to honor Bremen's anniversary.

100 years of aircraft construction in Bremen

To mark its 100th anniversary, a jubilee streetcar has been running on line 6 since Tuesday. The streetcar will run between the airport and the university for one year.

This era of aircraft construction was founded in 1924 by Mr. Focke and Mr. Wulf. Many other companies followed in the coming years and decades to establish Bremen as one of the most important locations in the aerospace industry in Europe.

The streetcar is a joint project of the Senator for Economics, Ports and Transformation, Airbus Bremen, the Bremen Economic Development Corporation and 8 other sponsors. One of these sponsors is b.r.m. IT & Aaerospace GmbH. On this frosty Tuesday, it was an honor for Mr. Marius Ammermann to represent b.r.m. on site.

The celebrations "100 years of aircraft construction in Bremen" were opened by Senator Kristina Voigt and Mr. Joachim Breker from Airbus.

"Hatten UAS" New EU regulation on the remote identification of drones

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has introduced a new regulation that makes the remote identification of drones mandatory in Europe. This regulation comes into force on 01.01.2024 and affects all drone operators. This will increase safety in European airspace in general and for drones in particular.

What is remote identification of drones?

The remote identification of drones is intended to ensure that authorities and citizens are able to identify drones from a distance. Drones are to be made identifiable both from the air and from the ground using a smartphone app. The serial number, registration number, the position of the remote pilot or the starting point and location of the drone can serve as identification. The use of appropriate technology for remote identification will be mandatory from 2024. With our test airfield for drones, we offer optimal conditions for testing and further developing innovations such as remote identification. Please get in touch with us, b.r.m. What does this mean for drone operators?

The new EU regulation on remote identification affects all drone operators. The legislator does not differentiate between the size or area of use of the drones. All drone operators must therefore ensure remote identification. Class C1, C2, C3, C5 and C6 drones already have suitable remote identification systems installed. Providers who do not yet use such remote identification systems must retrofit them and operate them in future. Modules that enable drones to comply with the new EU regulation are already available in various versions. As a U-Space Service Provider (USSP), we are happy to support you in this process.

More safety in European airspace

The new EU regulation represents a milestone that will significantly improve safety in the airspace. In addition, information on drones should also be made transparent for the general public. With the help of the special app for your own cell phone, important information about drones is shared publicly. However, information about the UAS operator is only shared with official authorities. Extensive drone testing is not only taking place in Germany. New projects for the integration of unmanned aviation into manned aviation are also being developed in neighboring EU member states. This includes the U-ELCOME project.

The U-ELCOME project

U-ELCOME is a project coordinated by Eurocontrol Innovation Hub, which has been tested at 15 different locations in Spain, Italy and France since November 2022. With financial support from CINEA (European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Agency) and 51 other partners, the project is scheduled to run for 3 years. The project will develop concrete applications and suggestions for improving draft legislation and services. CINEA is particularly committed to this. It is seen as improving the transparency and effectiveness of the management of EU financial programs.

Sustainable drone tests

The U-ELCOME project has the task of testing the legal framework together with the economic and civilian benefits of drones in practice-oriented scenarios. This means that it also involves the introduction and implementation of U1 and U2 U-Space Services. U1, i.e. the automatic identification and geosensitization of drones, and U2 U-Space Services, the management of flight planning, approval and safety, are being prepared for Europe-wide use by means of extensive tests. The tests will not only comply with the legal framework, such as the EU Implementing Regulation 2019/947, but also with the latest future-oriented concepts, such as the European Green Deal. This means that U-ELCOME not only uses and tests conventional electric drives, but also other sustainable drive concepts. These include, for example, hydrogen-powered drones, which are to be embedded in conventional supply chains consisting of vans and trucks in the future.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Dear friends and colleagues,

Santa Claus and his faithful reindeer have long since completed their integration into our airspace and the children are once again waiting for his arrival.

There has also been a lot of work on integration in unmanned aviation this year and perhaps we will soon be able to make it easier for Rudolph and his buddies to work in the Christmas airspace.

As 2023 draws to a close, I would like to give you a brief review of the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) highlights that have moved us:

The AERO aviation trade fair took place in Friedrichshafen from April 19-22, 2023. With the joint stand "Specific Made in Bremen" and numerous partners, we were able to comprehensively present the capacities and activities in Bremen and northern Germany. Please take a look.

The 54th Paris Air Show took place in early summer. In close cooperation with the stakeholders of "Bremen - City of Aerospace", we were able to present the topic "U-Space Reallabor Nord-Westdeutschland und Deutsche Bucht & UAS-Leitstelle Bremen (USSP)" to a European and international audience and enjoyed the lively exchange on UTM, ATM and other topics. The 13th National Maritime Conference in Bremen on September 14 and 15, 2023 presented a wide range of innovations for the maritime world. Here we were able to shed extensive light on the cross-cutting topic of unmanned aviation in a maritime context. Impressions

Over the course of the year, we won the SKADRO project (Scalable Drone Communication Systems for U-Space Areas) and are currently in the middle of implementing it together with our partners from the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute and TU Berlin.Find out more.

Back in May, we were able to test the project idea "U-Space Reallabor Nord-Westdeutschland und Deutsche Bucht & UAS-Leitstelle Bremen (USSP)" with an initial launch around our Hatten-UAS German Flight Center at Oldenburg-Hatten airfield (EDWH).

As part of a comprehensive permit, we now have 3600 km² of flying area available for BVLOS operations.(Details)

This approval has also been granted for 2024 and we are looking forward to more exciting UAS campaigns in the new year.
