Sustainability: Thinking about tomorrow

The term sustainability originates from 19th century forestry: a forest should always be managed in such a way that, firstly, the biotope remains healthy and undiminished and, secondly, the timber yield does not decrease over the generations. Sustainability therefore describes a method of management. This principle was subsequently transferred to other sectors of the economy.

In terms of IT, sustainability today means that the raw materials used for the technology should be recovered at the end of its life cycle and that the energy used to operate the computers comes exclusively from renewable sources. The latter condition can be met quite easily today, it is simply a question of good will. However, many manufacturers are still a long way from fully recycling technical components. Our servers are currently working on the maximum possible level of sustainability.
