Conferencing solutions have become an integral part of today's working world. They enable location-independent phone calls with cameras and document sharing. However, not all providers offer data protection.

Given the large number of providers, user-friendliness and data security are particularly important. In addition, installation effort and costs vary significantly between the different providers. Even if a video conference with a cloud connection initially seems compliant, it should always be borne in mind that the service provider has complete control over the data. Compliance with the GDPR is required by law for all data processing and data storage. It should be noted that although the providers encrypt the data in transit through the internet, decryption takes place on the provider's servers, i.e. on the cloud servers. Although the providers must comply with the GDPR, the user is dependent on the trust of the providers. As this trust is very questionable in terms of data protection, a secure alternative should be found.

Conference solutions at b.r.m.

The Bremen-based company b.r.m. IT & Aerospace offers its customers GDPR-compliant conference solutions through its Green IT-certified data center. The files are stored at b.r.m. unlike conventional providers, the files are not decrypted on the cloud servers in the USA, but on b.r.m.'s servers in Bremen. The use of Zoom, for example, is therefore GDPR-compliant, as Zoom no longer has control over the data. Several privacy principles as well as technical and organizational measures (TOM) ensure that the data of the conference solution is sustainably protected and handled in compliance with the GDPR.

The GDPR applies to all personal data that is processed on the internet. This means that every provider is required to comply with it. The Microsoft Teams platform is used by many companies for video conferences or other chats. Confidential documents are often exchanged in the process. However, researchers have now discovered that there is a security vulnerability at Microsoft.

After installation, many companies leave Microsoft Teams in its default configuration and rely on Microsoft's security barriers. The default configuration allows authorized team members to communicate with other external users. As a result, there is a basic risk of phishing, a method by which hackers attempt to obtain confidential information from a team member or the company using a form, for example. However, staff are often trained for precisely these cases and recognize the danger due to the dubious or conspicuous links in emails. In addition, the security barrier warns of the attacks with messages and restrictions.

Where is the security gap?

A team of researchers from the British security company Jumpsec has found a way to circumvent the security barrier of the standard configuration of Teams. To do this, the IT experts changed the recipient ID for the post-request of the message from external parties. As a result, the external message with the malware is identified as a message from an authorized team member and is not recognized by the Teams security control. This makes the phishing attack more difficult to detect by trained personnel and leads to the introduction of malware, which in turn can endanger all team members of the company. Unauthorized persons are able to gain access to sensitive data through this security gap. This security gap poses a massive threat to compliance with the GDPR.

The pandemic has had a huge impact on apprenticeships. Many companies have had to close down due to the costs and lack of income and have also had to discontinue apprenticeships. The shortage of skilled workers and this time have made it clear how important it is to train skilled workers.

The "Wir bilden aus!" logo may be used by recognized training companies. It recognizes the company for its high-quality training of young skilled workers. The IHK has developed this logo and hands it out to worthy companies.

The Bremen Chamber of Commerce regulates the vocational training of young people. In addition to dual in-company training, the IHK also organizes and supports further training. It recognizes new apprenticeships and can even award them.

Bremen-based IT service provider b.r.m. has been recognized as a training company by the Bremen and Bremerhaven Chamber of Industry and Commerce for many years. Together with other companies, b.r.m. has ensured the training of additional skilled workers during the pandemic. When it comes to energy saving and environmental friendliness, green IT seems to be the best and most proven solution for the time being. This rethink has resulted from rising energy prices and growing environmental awareness. However, even before this time, there were pioneers who were particularly concerned with the topic of energy saving and environmental friendliness.

What is the difference?

A data center emits an extreme amount of heat and often has to be cooled with air conditioning systems, for example. The electricity used for this is not only very expensive, but also unsustainable in terms of resources. In addition, the ecological footprint swells and is in turn very harmful to the environment.

In order to minimize and solve these problems, clever minds have developed the Green IT operating concept. In addition, many websites provide helpful tips for optimizing and saving resources. Bremen entrepreneur Harald Rossol was one of the first in Germany to successfully apply green IT. In addition, his company b.r.m. can save around 60% of energy costs without any loss of performance thanks to its certified data center, which also has a positive impact on customers. His hardware and software optimizations have helped him and his company to win a number of awards and a high reputation in the IT industry.

Green IT at b.r.m.

The new operating concept is standard for b.r.m. standard. In addition to numerous other optimizations in the data center, Green IT has proven to be a successful and certified concept. Post-growth & green IT - b.r.m. in Thega's resource efficiency event series. As part of the "Resource Efficiency Qualification", Thega from Thuringia offers further training for consultants. This is carried out with the support of the Thuringian Ministry of the Environment's State Initiative for Resource Conservation. In what is now the third block of the series, practical examples will be discussed and we are particularly pleased that Mr. Harald Rossol will be able to present b.r.m. and the award-winning green IT data center.

Qualification for resource efficiency through the Thega

SMEs can receive funding for resource efficiency measures through the Thuringian GREEN Invest funding program. The consultancy itself is also supported. Thega's series of events focuses on the continuous training of experts in the field of resource efficiency. In particular, the methods and instruments for analyzing and increasing resource efficiency in production processes are addressed. Theory and practice will be discussed over a total of 6 days. On 27.04.2022, various practical examples of resource efficiency will be presented, including b.r.m.'s green IT data center.

Energy and resource efficiency in data centers - Green IT

The environment and IT must not and should not be thought of separately. The energy costs of IT systems are still not recorded separately and therefore cannot be optimized.

The focus of new IT systems is on energy efficiency while maintaining high quality and security. We have developed a cost-effective operating concept that can save more than 60% energy - using standard market software and server components.

b.r.m. is a pioneer in green IT and helped develop the 'Blue Angel' certificate for energy-efficient data centers in collaboration with the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety and the German Federal Environment Agency. Our energy-efficient data center has been certified for quality, environment and occupational safety with its integrated management system according to 'ecostep' since 2005. In the same breath, the association blühfläche.de e.V. should also be mentioned, which is committed to the preservation and development of flowering areas and strips in northern Germany.

Post-growth leads to sustainable companies

These and other companies are synonymous with the efficient use of resources and their careful handling under the term post-growth. The fact that post-growth & green IT is also represented by b.r.m. at the Thega series of events on resource efficiency is naturally a particular pleasure for us. The basic idea behind the alternative economic model "post-growth economy" is that the economy should also function without growth. The current competition in the economy, which is all about faster, higher and further, is depleting natural resources.

As early as 1972, the Club of Rome warned of the consequences of unchecked economic growth. The path to post-growth can begin with small steps. For example, reducing output can lead to an improvement in quality. Certain products and services should be offered less, but in higher quality.
