b.r.m. is developing the UAS control center in Bremen and already operates Europe's largest BVLOS flight area, covering 3,600 square kilometers from the mainland across Jadebusen to the German Bight and North Sea. Future technologies: Expanded GNSS testing capabilities at the Hatten UAS German Flight Center

In addition to our proven range of services, we are continuously developing new testing options that meet the growing demands of the UAS industry. Two particularly innovative enhancements are the focus of our development work.

GNSS-denied: When GPS fails

In an increasingly networked world, dependence on GNSS signals is becoming the Achilles heel of many UAS applications. Interference or targeted attacks on GPS systems can cause critical missions to fail. That is why we are developing the ability to simulate GNSS-interfered environments in a controlled manner at Oldenburg-Hatten Airport.

Using GPS jamming signals and spoofing technologies, we create realistic test scenarios in which navigation systems must prove their reliability. This controlled test environment enables manufacturers to systematically test and verify their GNSS-independent navigation solutions. Supported by our aerial imagery and exclusive use of the test site, we conduct these demanding tests in a fully protected environment.

UAS dark field: Making visible what wants to remain invisible

While cooperative UAS and drones are digitally visible via standard transponder technologies such as ADS-B, ADS-L, Mode A/C, or FLARM, there is a dangerous "blind spot" of non-cooperative systems. These unknown UAS and drones with unclear intentions, identification, and position pose a growing challenge to airspace safety.

With an expansion of our existing sensor technology, we will in future be able to detect all UAS in the airspace and compare them with the existing "bright field" of cooperative systems. This enables the identification of non-cooperative UAS and the creation of a uniform situation picture in our UAS control center in Bremen USSP. Position, flight vector, and type will become visible and thus manageable for the protection of critical infrastructure—a key technology for the timely initiation of targeted countermeasures. This is a fundamentally important component of secure drone detection and drone defense.

In today's blog, we present the Hatten UAS German Flight Center at Oldenburg-Hatten Airport with the ICAO code (EDWH). Here, we test and trial the initial functionalities of our USSP under simulated U-Space conditions. However, it is much more than just a test site; it is your partner for the entire UAS development cycle.

From idea to market success

Whether you are a manufacturer developing a new UAS or an operator looking to test innovative applications, we will guide you through all regulatory hurdles. Operating permits are complex, but with our experience, you will be able to take to the skies quickly and in compliance with the law. We can either incorporate your UAS into our existing approval framework or support you in establishing your own operating rights.

We are particularly proud of our 3,600 km² operating area – the largest closed UAS test area in the EU. Here you can test all modes of operation from VLOS to EVLOS to BVLOS in realistic conditions. From the first ground test to the final operational test, we support UAS manufacturers up to 120 kg MTOM, and can extend these parameters if required. In addition, a café and catering are available for assignments of any duration, and numerous hotels near the airfield provide convenient accommodation.

What sets us apart: You don't have to outsource anything. We cover the entire process chain on site, from setup and maintenance to training and logistics. Our 5,500 m² hangar capacity, licensed aircraft inspectors, and an operating area for mixed flight operations create optimal conditions for your projects. We also host the annual Drone Days event, featuring exhibitions, specialist presentations, workshops, flight demonstrations, and networking opportunities related to innovative UAS solutions. We advise UAS manufacturers on the necessary certifications, such as CE marking, for market entry. At the same time, our flight schools cover the entire spectrum of training – from EU A1/A3 certificates of competence to the A2 remote pilot license and PPL. We conduct pattern training directly on the respective UAS so that your pilots are optimally prepared.

This year, we would like to take a brief look back at the past few months. From the biggest Drone Days to date, to numerous trade fairs and conferences, to our new location right at Bremen Airport.

b.r.m. IT & Aerospace is the "Engine of the North 2025"

In September, we were named the winner of the "Motor des Nordens 2025" (Engine of the North 2025) award at Bremen's Weserstadion stadium in front of around 120 guests. Among other things, we were recognized for our contribution to a national control system for civil unmanned aerial vehicles, the expansion of Oldenburg-Hatten Airport as a drone test laboratory, and the Drone Days industry gathering.

Bigger, more connected, more visible: Drone Days 2025

Drone Days 2025 was, of course, our personal highlight of the year. With over 400 participants over three days, we were able to bring together the unmanned aviation industry in Bremen and at Oldenburg-Hatten Airport. On site at conferences and trade fairs throughout Germany

Of course, we also attended many other conferences, trade fairs, and symposiums related to unmanned aviation, UAS/UAV, and USSP. These included the Flybots workshop in Hanover, the "Practical Forum on Digitalization" organized by the Oldenburg District Economic Development Agency, and the German Aerospace Regions Day in Dresden. As the UAS control center in Bremen USSP, we work together with strong partners to develop concrete opportunities and sustainable solutions for the use of unmanned aviation systems.

The AERO and AERO Drones aviation trade fairs have become a fixed date in the calendar of b.r.m. IT & Aerospace GmbH. From April 9 to 12, 2025, we were in Friedrichshafen with our joint booth and the initiative "Advanced Air Mobility, Northwest Germany, German Bight & UAS Control Center Bremen (USSP)".

Relocation to our location directly at Bremen Airport

Since October, we have been working at Hanna-Kunath-Straße 31, right next to Bremen Airport. In the heart of the "City of Aerospace," we are working on pioneering solutions for unmanned aviation—with a view of the runway. Several new projects and plans for 2026 are already in the starting blocks. The Drone Days will be a major highlight. Until take-off, we look forward to a peaceful holiday season and wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

When it comes to unmanned aerial systems (UAS), b.r.m. IT & Aerospace distinguishes between three main operating modes, each of which offers specific application possibilities and safety requirements.

VLOS (Visual Line of Sight) operations form the basis for training, type certification, and basic testing. EVLOS (Extended Visual Line of Sight) operations extend the operational range through structured observer concepts. BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) operations enable project-related long-range testing in accordance with SORA procedures in close coordination with aviation authorities.

To ensure safe and approvable operation, b.r.m. conducts comprehensive air and ground risk analyses in accordance with the European SORA procedure. These form the basis for the corresponding ConOps (Concept of Operations), which defines all operational and safety processes.

The b.r.m.'s UAS control center USSP in Bremen uses its own sensor network to ensure the digital visualization of all airspace participants. This provides an up-to-date picture of the air situation and enables the safe "mixed" operation of manned and unmanned systems – a core capability for the future European U-Space.

With three decades of IT experience and its own green IT data center operations, b.r.m. has the necessary digital fundamentals for modern aviation processes. b.r.m. IT & Aerospace supports organizations in obtaining the necessary operating permits from aviation authorities—including for UAS operations that were not previously possible.

As the central point of contact for all flight projects involving unmanned systems, we take on the technical and operational management of UAS trials – from flight planning and coordination with the authorities to implementation. As a future U-Space service provider, we operate the b.r.m. UAS control center Bremen USSP, which enables the safe coordination of manned and unmanned aircraft in the same airspace. Thanks to our extensive BVLOS experience, we can also reliably carry out flights beyond visual line of sight – in a flight area of over 3,600 km².

Oldenburg-Hatten Airport (EDWH)

The Oldenburg-Hatten airfield forms the operational base. With 16 hectares of operating space, a tower, training rooms, and 5,500 m² of hangar space, it offers ideal conditions. Thanks to comprehensive expansion of the permits, manned and unmanned air traffic can be coordinated in parallel here. The airfield is responsible for providing the infrastructure, tower arrangements, space allocation, approvals for segregated areas, and ground safety coordination. Here you will find everything you need for a comprehensive testing or flight campaign.

The b.r.m. IT & Aerospace moved to new premises in the immediate vicinity of Bremen Airport on October 8, 2025. From now on, we will be working at Hanna-Kunath-Straße 31 on forward-looking topics relating to unmanned aviation as well as efficient and sustainable IT solutions.

With our move, we are even closer to the center of the City of Aerospace. The new location also means shorter distances to local partners and institutions. In this way, we are strengthening precisely what makes us special: networked expertise in IT and unmanned aviation.

Even closer to the aviation of tomorrow

The close proximity to Bremen Airport is much more than just a new address for us. Here, where airliners, research projects and industry meet every day, we work on solutions for U-Space, advanced air mobility and safe drone operations. For our customers, this means even more practical relevance, faster coordination and a working environment that literally breathes innovation.

At the same time, we are consistently developing our Bremen UAS control center - as a future U-Space service provider and partner for demanding BVLOS and special missions.

The new location also brings the Drone Days even closer together. Yesterday, Thursday 25.09.2025, the 6th Lower Saxony Aviation Day took place in Hanover. Our Harald Rossol was there with Andreas Eickhoff, Senator for Economics, Ports and Transformation.

A great event with good networking opportunities. The @Drone Days were also present here.

Harald Rossol had the opportunity to talk to Mr. Grant Hendrik Tonne, Lower Saxony's Minister of Economic Affairs, about UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems), USSP (U-Space Service Provider) of General Aviation and, of course, the Drone Days. Here, too, it became clear that the aviation industry is an indispensable factor in the federal state of Lower Saxony and the federal state of Bremen, which of course also includes unmanned aviation.
